GPhone to come in September?

gphone-worldwide.jpgWord on the street has it that Google is merely a couple of weeks away from releasing their Google Phone worldwide after kicking off talks with service providers in India for an exclusive launch on one of their networks. Apparently, these talks rotated between Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Essar, where the largest and third largest mobile telephony operators could potentially carry the GPhone. It is also said that a simultaneous launch in the US and Europe would be a very real possibility, with only US regulatory approval being the only obstacle that Google has left to overcome.

The situation in India is slightly different as those talks were rumored to also include offering data, content, and platforms for users, ranging from Instant Messaging programs to search functions. According to a Google spokesperson, “We don’t comment on market rumor or speculation. However, Google is committed to providing users with access to the world’s information, and mobile becomes more important to those efforts every day. We’re collaborating with partners worldwide to bring Google search and applications to mobile users everywhere. However, we have nothing to announce at this time.”

Rumors of the GPhone has been circulating around the Internet long enough for some time now ever since the Apple iPhone was announced, but to date there has been nothing concrete. It would be a real coup to see Google release this oft talked about handset within a fortnight as that would mean secrecy and security surrounding the GPhone has been air tight – something other companies could definitely learn when it comes to new products. With no confirmation or a clear refute of the GPhone from Google, all we can do is sit down and keep our fingers crossed. It would be nice to see what this tech giant has to offer to the world of cellphones, and more interestingly would be the never ending flame wars between iPhone and GPhone fans.

WTF? Could somebody please explain to me why the US is so far behind in accepting cell phones. Don’t we buy more of them than any other nation?
